Programs

With an emphasis on reducing barriers to success, Burroughs offers programs that provide  individuals the opportunity to obtain instruction and connect with services they may not otherwise receive.  The following are some programs currently available at Burroughs.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

This program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.  IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Adult Language and Literacy

Burroughs offers English as a second language to adult learners . Classes are offered from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 6:00 PM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday.  Please contact Burroughs for more information and to register. Burroughs also partners with the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Bridgeport to actively promote language and literacy by identifying needs in our community and meeting those needs through direct services. We strive to help our community acquire the oral and literacy skills necessary to be successful in the workplace, participate in the education of their children and lead productive lives.

Our Woven Community (OWC)

This program provides refugee women the opportunity to become self-sufficient leaders, take pride in their heritage, integrate into the community and become empowered with entrepreneurial skills and economic opportunity.  Learning to use sewing machines, they create handbags, scarves and other items that are sold at local craft fairs and holiday events. They use donated materials combined with fabrics representing their own heritage, weaving their former and new homes together into a beautiful handcrafted item.

Community Garden

With over 24 garden beds available to the community, residents are invited to sign up to care for their own raised garden bed.  Participants have access to their garden any time to grow their very own fruits, vegetable, flower and herbs.  Our community garden also supports our local food pantry by donating fresh vegetables.
